Short answer: Garage door cables are the two steel lines running from the bottom corners of the door up to drums on the shaft above it, and they carry the lifting force to the door. They fail three ways: slow fraying, a sudden snap, or unwinding off the drum. Fraying is the one warning sign you can usually catch early.
When homeowners think about garage door repairs, they think about springs and openers. Cables get overlooked — until they fail, at which point they can cause serious damage to the door, the opener, and sometimes the car parked underneath.
Here's what every homeowner should know about the most underrated component in their garage door system.
Two steel cables run from the bottom corners of your garage door up to drums mounted on the torsion bar above the door. As the springs unwind, the drums turn and wind the cables, lifting the door. The cables are what physically connect the lifting force to the door panels.
Three main failure modes:
1. Slow fraying. Steel cable strands wear over thousands of cycles. You'll see fuzzy fibers sticking out of the cable as it deteriorates. This is the warning sign — fraying cables are the only failure mode you can usually catch before catastrophic break.
2. Sudden snap. Usually triggered by a related component failure. Spring snaps, opener forces door against an obstruction, or door drops on something. Without warning, one cable lets go. The door drops on the broken side — sometimes by a few inches, sometimes all the way to the floor — and crooks at an angle.
3. Cable comes off the drum. Often happens after a spring failure when the door is forced or lifted manually incorrectly. The cable unwinds off the drum and hangs loose. The door is jammed and won't move.
Never try to drive your car out from under a garage door with a broken cable. The door is now unstable. Manual operation puts the whole weight of the door on one side of the lift system, which can cause the spring to release energy unexpectedly.
Never try to re-wind the cable yourself. The drums are under tension from the spring above. Releasing or adjusting them requires the spring to be safely de-tensioned first.
Once or twice a year, with the door closed, look at the cables from a safe distance:

That's why catching cables in the fraying stage matters. Cables caught early are the cheapest residential garage door repair. Cables that fail catastrophically can wreck the whole system.
If a cable failure damaged other components, the warranty may handle the cascade as separate covered repairs, or they may treat it as a single claim. Your contractor will document the cascade for the warranty company.

The door loses lift on that side. It usually drops a few inches or all the way down, hangs crooked, and can pull rollers out of the track. The loose cable dangles beside the door. Keep people and vehicles out from under it and do not run the opener again until it is repaired.
With the door closed, look along both cables from a safe distance. Fuzzy broken strands, kinks, or rust spots are signs of wear. Both cables should be taut and wound evenly on their drums, and the bottom of the door should sit level. Any slack or an uneven corner means service is due.
It is not a safe DIY repair. The cable drums sit on a shaft held under high tension by the torsion spring, and that spring has to be de-tensioned with winding bars before a cable can be re-wound. Getting it wrong can cause serious injury. Use a licensed and insured technician.
Cables are usually listed as covered mechanical components in standard home warranty plans, so a failure from normal wear is generally eligible. Damage from a vehicle impact or a storm is not. If the cable failure damaged other parts, your contractor should document the cascade so the warranty company can evaluate it.
