  • Tighten hardware annually. Thermal cycling loosens fasteners. A socket set and fifteen minutes.
  • Test the balance seasonally. It is the earliest warning you get.
  • Test the auto-reverse. Object under the door, it should reverse on contact.
  • Replace both springs together. They wear at the same rate. Replacing one means the other fails soon and you pay the trip charge twice.

Do not touch the torsion spring

Torsion springs store enough energy to kill. They are wound under tension with bars, and releasing that tension without the right tools and technique is how people get seriously hurt. Same for the bottom brackets, which carry full spring load.
