Short answer: Garage door openers quit in hot weather because the motor has a thermal cutoff that shuts it down before it overheats. Hot garage air, springs that have lost tension, thinned grease on tracks and rollers, and aging circuit boards all make the motor work harder, so the cutoff trips sooner than it would in mild weather.

Add 95-degree garage air temperature to a motor that's already worked hard during winter, and the cutoff trips earlier than it would in spring or fall.
Three things make this worse:
1. The springs are losing tension. As springs age, they lose force. The opener has to work harder to do the same job. In the heat, that extra work pushes the motor past the thermal cutoff. 2. The grease is thinning. Garage door grease that worked fine all winter gets watery in summer heat and stops lubricating the tracks and rollers. More friction = more work for the opener. 3. The opener's own electronics drift. Electrolytic capacitors in the motor's circuit board degrade faster in heat. A 10-year-old opener that's marginal in winter starts failing intermittently in summer.
Test 1: Manual lift. With the opener disengaged (red rope pull), can you lift the door by hand smoothly? If it's heavy, sticks, or won't stay open at chest height — your spring is going. The opener isn't the problem; the spring is forcing the opener to work harder than it should.
Test 2: Listen. When you press the remote, do you hear a hum but no movement? That's the motor running with too much load. Could be the spring, could be the gear inside the opener stripping.
Test 3: Watch the door go up. If the door starts to open but stalls or reverses near the top, your safety reverse system thinks the door hit something. Could be the photo eyes are misaligned (cheap fix) or the tension calibration is off.
